We discussed the "Messy Middle"—that point in every project or semester where the excitement is gone, but the finish line isn't visible yet. This is where character is forged. We talked about how to push through boring or difficult phases.
This is often the point where teens quit (sports, instruments, jobs). Teaching them to recognize the "middle" as a normal phase helps them persevere rather than interpreting boredom as a sign to stop.
Letter to Future Self: Students wrote encouragement for when they want to quit. They also made an accountability plan for finishing the semester strong.
Parent Tip: If they are struggling with a commitment, remind them: "You're just in the messy middle. Keep going. You'll be glad you finished."
Do I model finishing things? Do I have half-finished projects all over the house?
The "Done" List: Instead of a To-Do list, make a "Done" list at dinner. Have everyone list 3 things they finished today. Celebrate completion, no matter how small.
Notice completion. "You worked on that paper all week and got it turned in. Great job finishing strong."
