This week we redefined leadership not as a position, title, or rank, but as influence. We discussed how everyone has influence in some sphere—whether in their family, friend group, team, or class—and is therefore called to lead.
Teens often think they can't lead until they are "in charge" or older. Understanding leadership as influence empowers them to take responsibility for their actions and impact right now, rather than waiting for permission or a title.
Interview a Leader: Your student has been challenged to interview one adult leader (parent, coach, teacher, pastor) about their leadership journey.
Parent Tip: If they ask to interview you, take it seriously! Be honest about your struggles and growth. If not you, help them brainstorm who to ask.
Where is my primary sphere of influence right now? Do I model leadership as service or as power in my own home?
Circle of Influence Map: Sit down with a piece of paper and draw a circle in the middle with your family name. Draw lines out to all the places your family has influence (school, work, neighborhood, church). Discuss: "How can we use our influence for good in one of these areas this week?"
Notice when they influence a sibling or friend positively (e.g., suggesting a game, stopping gossip, helping without being asked). Say: "That was great leadership when you..."
